We are a ceramics studio based in Fremantle, specialising in hand building one off pieces for the home, catering, and restaurants around Perth. More than that, Winterwares exists as a reminder to slow down and find contentment in simple, daily rituals.
When we started, I got a lot of comments about how peaceful the studio felt, so we decided to share it with others through our Mindful Making workshops. From white speckled latte cups, scented candles, and hanging planters, each piece is the outcome of our quiet revolution to find joy in the ordinary, simple moment. When we're working in the studio, we try to practice this by taking our time to enjoy lunch, or using that time to put our phones away and focus entirely on making with clay.
Anything that has a calming or grounding effect is inspiring to me. It could be a piece of music, a walk at the beach, or a pile of vintage linen at a swap-meet. If it helps me to pause, reminds me to breath, or to be present, it usually has an influence on my ceramic designs.
I start most mornings with a freshly brewed cup of chai on my back porch and on a perfect day, I'll also do some meditation, the gardening, or some yoga. While they don't happen every morning, I always make the time for a quiet cup of tea before the day gets busy.
My studio is my happy place, I find it so meditative to work with the clay. When home I love to light some candles, put music on and take a hot bath. In Summer a float in the ocean does wonders for restoring balance.
Supporting local means being aware of where and how things are made and supporting the people in my community who make things with love and integrity. As much as possible I try to buy less, but buy quality; considering materials, craftsmanship, sustainability and beauty.
